Tracing Early Cannabis Discourse in the United States through Chronicling America
Department: A&S History
Researcher: Isaac Campos, PhD
Dataset and Source: Digital newspaper collections on the use, history, and cultural impact of marijuana/cannabis from the Library of Congress Chronicling America database
Status: In Progress
Goals and/or Outcomes: This project takes a closer look at the text of historic newspaper articles to track the discourse on marijuana/cannabis.
- What can we learn through analyzing the characteristics of these articles’ text (like the description of effects or the cultural groups referenced)?
- How does this respond to, complicate, and subvert traditional narrative of "Mexican hypothesis" as explanation for the emergence of recreational marijuana use and subsequent demonization of the practice in the United States?
